Organic non-linear optical (NLO) single crystal of 2-Amino-6-methylpyridinium 2,2,2-trichloroacetate (AMPTCA) have been grown in methanol solution under slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature. The purity and lattice parameters of AMPTCA single crystal are confirmed through single crystal and powder XRD studies. The titled material belongs to monoclinic system with P21/n space group. The observed lattice parameters are a = 11.636 (8) Å, b = 14.663 (12) Å, c = 13.710 (4) Å and β = 96.326 (4) Å. The volume of the crystal is V = 2365.4 (9) Å3. The title compound was subjected to optical characterization by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy in the range starting from 200 to 1000 nm and the optical transparency is plotted. The UV cut off wavelength is found to be at 250 nm with a transparency about 92%. The crystalline perfection was studied by chemical etching analysis. The electrical properties were analyzed by dielectric studies and the third order NLO properties of grown crystal are confirmed through single beam Z -scan technique.
